We had a discussion about how to save turnings when things don't go quite as planned. Norm Beal led off the discussion by talking about drilling a hole for a tool handle. He tried to drill it after turning it into shape and had the drill bit wander making an off-center hole for the tool steel. To fix the problem, he glued a dowel in place of the hole and re-drilled the piece using a steady rest helping to support the end furthest from the headstock. It was noted that you can drill the hole first when turning tool handles to avoid the issue.
We also had Craig Demlow, Tom Jones, and Ted Wilkins discuss what to do when you go too deep and end up through the bottom of the piece. There were several solutions mentioned including gluing a board to the bottom. Craig also mentioned turning a tenon of either the same wood or a contrasting one and gluing it in place of the missing material. He also showed his use of glue and wood shavings to plug one mistake. Tom talked about using decorations to disguise the repair.
Chris Demlow also showed a piece that had a knot missing. We talked about possibly widening the hole and gluing a dowel in place of the missing material.
Our January President's Challenge item is a "Box with a Lid".
The pictures below show some of the items brought in for the monthly President's Challenge entries and show-and-tell. Congratulations to our President's Challenge winners Erik Blom and Emil Hiris! As always, thanks to all of those that brought in items for the President's Challenge, show and tell, and those that brought in flag bases for our veterans.
Don't forget about our special challenge of turning wooden flag holders for our veterans at the Ann Arbor VA hospital. All bases should have a 3/16" hole to accept the flag. We are starting a mentoring program for our membership. If you are willing to help by fielding questions, please get in touch with any of the club officers.
