The last meeting of the MIOHWoodturners was held on February 13th. Ruddy Allen was present as a guest for his first meeting. Ron Olin reported that we have $2364.54 in our treasury with all expenses having been paid. Al Goldstein brought the Ikea lights he purchased for the club member and we took orders for more. It appears to be a really popular item. Al also brought is personal light in to show the modifications he made using Harbor Freight magnets which makes it highly versatile. As usual “Show and Tell” brought in a lot of interesting item that members shared. The Challenge for the month was to turn a small/miniature item and the winners were Ron Birdsell, Ken Goetz, and Lynn Southward. Thanks to all that participated. Break time/social hour was another success thanks to Rick Enders and his wife for the cookie donations. The demo. was presented by Rick Kimling on Scroll saw techniques with emphases on making an insert for a potpourri bowl. Great job by Rick. He does some fantastic Scroll work and this could add another technique for decorating turnings. Thanks Rick. The Challenge for March will be to turn any item and decorate it with an insert. The insert can be anything you can envision (scroll saw item, stone, Inlace, items imbedded in epoxy, wire inlay, metal). Got the idea? Our demo next month will be presented by several members. It will be shot segments on various embellishment techniques. To date it will include wire inlay, painting, the Sorby texturing tool and wire burning. All subject to change but that’s the idea. See you in March.

The President's Challenge for the March 12th meeting will be a turned item with an insert (see above).  The meeting will feature various embellishments techniques.

The next meeting will be on February 13th at 10:00AM at the Christ Episcopal Church.  Hopefully we will see you there!   Click Here to View The Map of Our New Meeting Location

The pictures below show some of the items brought in for the monthly President's Challenge and show-and-tell.  Congratulations to President's Challenge winners Ron Birdsell-Novice,  Ken Goetz-Intermediate, and Lynn Southward-Advanced!   As always, thanks to all of those that brought in items for the President's Challenge, show and tell, and those that brought in flag bases for our veterans.  Don’t forget to bring your show and tell items. It’s always good to see what others are doing.

Jim Nickless was kind enough to put together a list of available resources for our club library.  Here is a link to Jim's list:  Library List

We are starting a mentoring program for our membership.  If you are willing to help by fielding questions, please get in touch with any of the club officers.

Don't forget about our special challenge of turning wooden flag holders for our veterans at the Ann Arbor VA hospital.  All bases should have a 3/16" hole to accept the flag.  Lloyd Niederriter brought this need to our attention.  He is shown below holding one of the holders made by our members even though Jim Nickless is now heading the program.
