Big news for March!!!!  We will have a special demonstration featuring Alan Lacer on Saturday March 31, 2012.  The cost to attend is $15 for MIOH club members and $35 for non-members.  The demonstration is scheduled for 8:30-5PM and will include refreshments and lunch.

Alan will be discussing proper use and sharpening of the skew chisel, using the bowl gouge, turning boxes, using and making hook tools, and general finishing.  For more information about Alan Lacer, check out Alan's site at http://www.woodturninglearn.net/

Seating is limited to the first 40 people to register for the special Alan Lacer demonstration so contact Lynn or Craig ASAP if you are interested so you don't miss this opportunity.

With that exciting news out of the way, Lynn Southward was kind enough to demonstrate the use of his Jamison style deep hollowing system.  The Jamison style system relies on the tool rest and a secondary rest to prevent vibration and rotation at the cutting tip.  Although these systems aren't cheap, imitations can be made for less than half the cost of name brand systems.

He started with a blank mounted to a face plate using all the screw holes available.  Lynn talked about the importance of using good quality screws (no drywall screws) to help prevent vibration and separation form the face plate.  He began the actual turning part by simply rounding over the cylinder after showing us his overall design.

Lynn set up his system so that the laser is a little bit off of the scraper tool bit.  This distance between the laser and the cutting tip sets the thickness of the vessel wall when the laser drops off the side of the vessel.  The top of the tool bit is set so that it cuts on center (or ever so slightly above center).  It was noted that some folks use a drill bit or forstner bit mounted in a drill chuck to do some of the hollowing and set a final depth to the hole.  He explained that the system takes lots of the stress out of hollowing vessels and can be done one handed with very little difficulty.

Although Lynn wasn't able to finish the hollowing due to time constraints, it is easy to see why a system like this can be a very useful tool for turners!

Our March President's Challenge item is "Turned Kitchen Ware".

Jim Nickless was kind enough to put together a list of available resources for our club library.  Here is a link to Jim's list:  Library List

The pictures below show some of the items brought in for the monthly President's Challenge entries and show-and-tell.  Congratulations to our President's Challenge winners Lynn Southward and Tom Jones!  As always, thanks to all of those that brought in items for the President's Challenge, show and tell, and those that brought in flag bases for our veterans.

Don't forget about our special challenge of turning wooden flag holders for our veterans at the Ann Arbor VA hospital.  All bases should have a 3/16" hole to accept the flag.

We are starting a mentoring program for our membership.  If you are willing to help by fielding questions, please get in touch with any of the club officers.
